Tossy's
Background:
My travels to Turkey, Italy, Ireland,
and India have provided endless inspiration for designs.
The aesthetics, history, and spiritual elements of these cultures have
influenced my work. I am also inspired
by natural and organic forms.
I graduated from Bates College with a
BA in Studio Art in 2001. I completed a senior thesis in
sculpture that integrated many small mixed-media elements
into a large installation sculpture- exploring many themes that are
still a part of my design work.
During '99-'00, I studied and
lived for a year in Florence, Italy, which influenced my art
profoundly. Of course the rich cultural and art histories of
the region were important, but my true inspirations came from my
sculpture studies under maestro Marcello Guasti, "the most important
contemporary sculptor in Tuscany," (www.chalcos.it) The exposure I
had to this sculptor's work, philosophy, and
history shaped not only my carving techniques, but
my approach to aesthetics and art-as-work. See
some of M. Guasti's works online at www.italiansculpture.com.
It was in this studio that I learned to carve alabaster and
marble, techniques which I have since translated into wax for my
jewelry. Also while in Italy, I studied jewelry at the Studios
Fuji in Florence (www.artelinguaitalia.com),
where I learned metalsmithing and received praise for my detail
and steady hand. In 2005 I attended an Advanced Stone
Setting course with Blaine Lewis of the New Approach School, where I
learned techniques from flush setting, to prong setting,
to channel setting. I have also sharpened my wax skills
in 2006 at Kate Wolf's wax class in Portland, ME. www.wolftools.biz |
